WRDA Statement on the Violent Incident in North Belfast
WRDA is deeply saddened and horrified by the violence that took place on the streets of North Belfast last night. Our thoughts are with the victim of this appalling attack and we hope for a full recovery.
We thank the witnesses and the members of the public who bravely intervened at their own risk, and the first responders who were on the scene within minutes. Collectively, they may have saved a life.
Videos and images from the incident have circulated widely, we advise people not to share such images out of respect for the privacy and dignity of the victim and to avoid retraumatising their family and loved ones. If you are a parent or guardian, be aware that your children may have seen this footage and that it is extremely disturbing, we encourage you to speak with them about what they have seen in an open and supportive manner.
At the same time, we note that some are using this incident to incite others to violence and to ignite fears in communities in Belfast and beyond. We urge calm and a community-focused response. We should resist attempts to divide communities based on the actions of one person. There also has been an arrest, and we remind people to be careful what they share online to ensure that justice can follow its normal course.
We stand in solidarity with all those affected and those feeling fearful today. We think of the communities who may feel under threat this evening and encourage everyone to look out for their neighbours and friends. If you need to, in an emergency, please call 999.
Please note that maternity services at the Royal Victoria Hospital will operate as usual, and will put provisions in place for those worried about their baby or in labour to attend hospital as normal, this will likely be replicated across hospital services, so do not hesitate to call them if you need to.
