WRDA is carrying out research on the role of firearms in VAWG in Northern Ireland.
18 August, 2025 – The Women’s Resource and Development Agency (WRDA) has launched a new research project to explore the intersection of domestic abuse and firearm access in Northern Ireland. This lived experience based study aims to understand the scale and impact of abuse exacerbated by the presence of firearms, and to contribute meaningfully to existing research.
The research, which will culminate in a report to be published in December 2025, seeks to gather anonymous testimonies from women affected by domestic abuse where firearms played a role. Abuse includes: physical violence including non-fatal strangulation; coercive control; verbal or psychological violence; sexual violence, coercion or abuse; financial abuse; stalking; spiritual abuse, or any combination of the above.
Key Objectives of the Research:
To assess how firearm ownership or access intensifies domestic abuse.
To evaluate the safety and wellbeing of victims and their families in homes with firearms.
To examine the vetting and licensing processes for firearm ownership.
To identify potential reforms and raise awareness of the issue.
WRDA is committed to protecting the anonymity of all participants. Quotes used in the final report will be published verbatim to preserve the integrity of the submissions, and no identifying information will be collected.

Participants are encouraged to engage only if they feel able to do so, and WRDA has provided links to support services for anyone who may need help following their participation.
