WRDA Welcomes School Uniform (Trousers) Bill and Calls for End to Gendered Uniform Policies

24 August 2026 - The Women's Resource and Development Agency (WRDA) has submitted its response to the Assembly's Call for Views on the School Uniform (Trousers) Bill. We argue that school uniform policies should prioritise students' dignity, comfort and choice, rather than reinforcing outdated gender expectations. All pupils should have the right to choose whether to wear trousers and there should be an end to gender-specific uniform policies across Northern Ireland's schools.

Our submission highlights the importance of challenging harmful gender stereotypes from a young age and notes that offering a range of uniform options benefits all students, including transgender, gender non-conforming, and cisgender pupils.

WRDA is urging Assembly Members to support the Bill as a practical and positive step towards greater equality in schools.
