WRDA Calls for Major Changes to Draft Northern Ireland AI Strategy
12 October 2026 - The Women’s Resource and Development Agency (WRDA) has submitted its response to the consultation on the draft Northern Ireland Artificial Intelligence Strategy, warning that the proposals fail to adequately address the risks AI poses to women and girls, gender equality, employment, and the environment.
In its submission, WRDA argues that the strategy does not sufficiently consider the growing role of AI in facilitating violence against women and girls, including technology-facilitated abuse and deepfakes, despite increasing evidence of these harms. The organisation also raises concerns that AI systems can reinforce existing gender biases and inequalities, potentially excluding women from decisions that will shape Northern Ireland’s digital future.
WRDA further highlights the environmental impact of AI infrastructure, as well as the potential consequences for jobs and livelihoods, particularly in sectors where women are overrepresented and in the creative industries.
WRDA is calling on The Executive Office to strengthen the strategy by embedding gender equality considerations throughout AI policy, improving regulation and safeguards, involving women and underrepresented groups in decision-making, and addressing the wider social, economic and environmental impacts of AI.
