Transformation and ongoing conflict in contemporary Belfast
Since the signing of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, a range of policies, initiatives and interventions have been introduced with the goal of transforming conflict. These involve a number of different strategies, including the management of dynamics at interfaces, the regeneration of deprived areas, the ‘re-imaging’ of paramilitary murals, planning and management of public events, and a range of social services provided by governmental bodies or NGOs. The overall goal of these initiatives has been to transform the ‘root causes’ of conflict in Northern Ireland to prevent future conflict from erupting, whilst, at the same time, making a concrete impact on the extent of conflict in everyday life.
The workshop organised by the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of St Andrews,
will explore the role and experience of ongoing conflict in contemporary Belfast, and the experience of ‘transformative’ policies and initiatives. The event takes place at Queen’s University, Belfast on 20th January, 2010.
For more information please email Dr Audra Mitchell, Project Investigator at Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at Alm21@st-andrews.ac.uk.
This event will focus on the preparations for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) 2010 session which will concentrate on the Beijing Platform for Action which is entering its 15th year in 2010. The Platform for Action, or PfA for short, is a set of promises made by governments all over the world, including ours, to the women in their countries. It describes the things which governments and women's groups should do to achieve equality for women.
It was written in Beijing in 1995. Thousands of women from all over the world, including many from the UK and the Women's National Commission, took part. The women at Beijing worked with government officials to make sure that the PfA covered all the issues which are important to women such as health, education, girls and violence against women. We want you to be part of that discussion, your input for next years CSW will once again be very important.
The event will be held at the Holiday Inn Belfast, 22 Ormeau Avenue, Belfast on Thursday 21st January 2010 from 10am to 3pm. Click here for an RSVP form.
