Building the Community - Pharmacy Partnership Programme (CDHN)

Financial assistance is available to community organisations working in partnership with community pharmacists on projects and initiatives that address local health and social well-being needs across Northern Ireland. 

The Building the Community-Pharmacy Partnership is a joint venture between the Community Development and Health Network and Pharmacy Branch and The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS). The programme aims to promote and support local communities to work in partnership with community pharmacists to address local health and social wellbeing needs using a community development approach. The programme works towards:

  • Increasing local people's skills, encouraging community activity and self help.
  • Increasing local people's understanding of health issues.
  • Encourage local people to play a role in promoting health.

Level 1 funding is available for organisations interested in becoming involved in the partnership but do not want to commit to a large project until they are sure of what areas they should focus on. The funding will assist developing ideas, partnerships, and defining local needs and issues.

St Stephen’s Green Trust General Grant Scheme

Grant Value: €1,000 to €12,000

The St Stephens Green Trust is open for applications under its general grant scheme for 2012 focusing specifically on Homelessness, Prisoners/Ex Prisoners and Travellers.  St Stephen's Green Trust is a grant-giving organisation which supports organisations working in Ireland to improve the lives of people who are affected by poverty/disadvantage and social exclusion.

Grants will be made to organisations working in 3 specific areas:

  • Homelessness
  • Prisoners / Ex-Prisoners
  • Travellers

Please note the Trust is not accepting applications from organisations with income of more than €500,000 in 2012.

Application forms are not freely available. This is to ensure organisations meet the criteria before writing the application. If you feel your organisation is eligible, please contact the Trust giving brief details of the project and an application form will be sent to you.

The deadline for receipt of applications is Thursday 23rd February 2012. Successful grantees will receive their grants in April.

Healthly Heart Grants

Grant Value: £10,000

The Healthy Heart Grant is part of the Healthy Lifestyle Initiative of Heart Research UK.
Heart Research UK Healthy Heart Grants of up to £10,000 are available for new, original and innovative projects that actively promote Heart Health and help to prevent, or reduce, the risk of heart disease in specific groups or communities.

The communities selected for Healthy Heart Grants must be within the United Kingdom. Applicants must be representatives of community and voluntary organisations or individuals conducting research unless otherwise approved in writing by the Charity. Northern Ireland Groups funded previously include the University of Ulster - Heart to Heart project and Willowbank Ltd - Love your Heart campaign.

There are two rounds each year, one in May and one in November. Applications for the May round can be submitted during January and February with a closing date of 28 February. Applications for the November round can be submitted during July and August with a closing date of 31 August. Applications will not be accepted outside of these dates.

Reaching Out: Connecting Older People (Big Lottery)

Financial assistance is available for community and voluntary led organisations in Northern Ireland to help promote the inclusion of isolated and vulnerable older people.

Connecting Older People is provided and administered by the Big Lottery Fund Northern Ireland. It is a revenue grants programme intended to support projects that will promote the inclusion of older people by targeting individuals at greatest risk of exclusion or isolation. The programme's outcomes are to ensure that older people are more engaged with society and have the opportunities to live full lives within their community. Projects should:

  • Work with people aged 60+.
  • Last between three and five years.
  • Target isolated or vulnerable people.
  • Involve beneficiaries in the design and delivery of the project.

Projects should demonstrate how they intend to achieve the programme's outcome through an agreed timeframe.

Starbucks / Youth Action UK Grants

Starbucks Youth Action that aims to encourage and inspire a generation of young people to take action and create positive local change. Starbucks has joined up with UK Youth and the Irish Youth Foundation to provide training, support and funding to young people from 10 cities in the UK and Ireland.

The scheme covers Greater London, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester.

Essentially the project supports young people to improve their communities. The project must create positive social change and enable young people between 16 - 24 to be inspired to create such change in their local community.

There are grants of up to £2,000 available for seed funding and volunteer hours from Starbucks partners. As well as supporting the young people to bring to life the projects that mean the most to them, there is also training on offer  to young people on managing a budget, working with volunteers and project management.

Sport Relief Community Cash Grants

Community Foundation Northern Ireland will administer the 2012 Sport Relief Community Cash Fund
Sport Relief has set aside a £50,000 cash fund for local community groups across Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland. Grants ranging from £500 to £1,000 are available to grassroots community organisations in Northern Ireland that are working to make people's lives better.

The Sport Relief Community Cash scheme will prioritise applications from those who are most disadvantaged, either because of where they live, or because they come from a group that is considered vulnerable.

In Northern Ireland, therefore, priority will relate to:

  • groups working with those who are most deprived according to the indices of social deprivation;
  • groups benefiting individuals considered vulnerable such as: the elderly, people with physical / mental / emotional issues; young people at risk; minority ethnic groups.
  • One-off activities as long as they have longer-term benefits will also be considered.

The programme is open to groups that have never applied for funding before. Applications can be considered from groups who have previously received funding but current grant holders cannot be offered a grant unless their earlier grant is now closed.

Daphne lll Programme Action Grants

The Daphne III programme aims to contribute to the protection of children, young people and women against all forms of violence and attain a high level of health protection, well-being and social cohesion.
Its specific objective is to contribute to the prevention of, and the fight against all forms of violence occurring in the public or the private domain, including sexual exploitation and trafficking of human beings.
It aims to take preventive measures and provide support and protection for victims and groups at risk.

The European Parliament and the Council adopted a Decision establishing the specific programme Daphne III as part of the General Programme "Fundamental Rights and Justice"

The programme will achieve its objectives by means of transnational actions (Action grants), Operating grants and the Commission's own-initiated actions (Calls for tenders).

Action Grants are now open for applications with a closing date of 29th March 2012

The focus of the Daphne III programme is on:

  • assisting and encouraging NGOs and other organisations active in this field;
  • developing and implementing targeted awareness-raising actions;
  • disseminating results obtained under the previous Daphne Programmes;
  • identifying and enhancing actions contributing to positive treatment of people at risk of violence;
  • setting up and supporting multidisciplinary networks;
  • ensuring the expansion of the knowledge base and exchange, identification and dissemination of information and good practice;
  • designing and testing awareness-raising and educational materials, and supplementing and adapting those already available;
  • studying phenomena related to violence and its impact;
  • developing and implementing support programmes for victims and people at risk, and intervention programmes for perpetrators

LankellyChase Foundation

The Foundation supports charitable projects under the following programmes: The Arts; Breaking Cycles of Abuse; Free and Quiet Minds; and Local People Local Places.

The Lankelly Foundation was established in 1968 to support organisations working in any field of charitable endeavour.  From its beginnings, the administration of the Lankelly Foundation has been linked to that of the Chase Charity.  Following a policy review undertaken in 2004, the two grant-making charities have merged to become a single grant-giving organisation entitled LankellyChase Foundation.

The Foundation targets its funds to achieve something which otherwise would not happen, or to sustain something which otherwise might fail.

Support is available to registered charities, industrial and provident societies, exempt charities and community interest companies or organisations applying for charitable status. Further criteria are as follows:

Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust - Ireland and Northern Ireland Grants Programme

Financial assistance is available to local, regional and national Irish organisations who demonstrate effective and innovative programmes in the area of promoting peace, justice and equality.  There are no fixed grant amounts.

To support the ongoing development of a just and peaceful society in the island of Ireland, including: enhancing civil liberties and human rights; encouraging co-operation across religious, racial and political divides; and strengthening civil society.

The Trust aims to fund work which will contribute at a strategic level to the ongoing transformation of the Northern Ireland conflict through strengthening 'new politics', fostering a culture of human rights, equality and civil liberties, supporting initatives which promote a shared understanding of the root causes of past violence and work to strengthen citizens engagement on social justice issues, particularly from marginalised groups.

Projects with a focus on women's participation will be particularly welcomed, as will projects which encourage racial justice

The current deadline is 12pm on 2nd April 2012.

Lloyds TSB Standard Grants

Funding is available to registered charities in Northern Ireland for projects that target social and community needs or education Standard Grants are provided at an average of between £3,000 and £4,000.

The Lloyds TSB Foundation is committed to supporting underfunded, grassroots charities that enable people, especially disabled and disadvantaged people, to play a fuller role in society.
The Foundation has two main target areas to which it seeks to allocate funds:

Social and community:
Including: Community Services, Advice Services, Disabled People, Promotion of Health, Civic Responsibility and Cultural Enrichment

Education and training:

  • Projects which help socially excluded people develop their potential and secure employment.
  • Employment training (for disabled and disadvantaged people).
  • Promotion of life skills, independent living skills for disabled people.
  • Enhancing education for disabled young people, pre-school education, literacy skills (where no other support is available).

BBC Children in Need Main Grants & Small Grants

BBC Children in Need provides grants to local projects that work with  disadvantaged children and young people to make a real difference to the quality of their lives. In the last year over £3m has been distributed in Northern Ireland and some 300 projects are currently in receipt of a grant in rural and urban communities throughout the country.
 
They very much want to hear from groups who are helping children and young people to overcome disadvantage such as:

  • living in poverty or situations of deprivation
  • disability
  • behavioural or psychological difficulties
  • illness, distress, abuse or neglect

It is important that you are specific about the nature of the disadvantage in a request for funding, and clear about the difference your project will make. You can make an application at any time throughout the year to fit with your project plans. They operate 4 grant rounds with closing dates of:

  • 15th January - notification by end of April
  • 15th April - notification by end of July
  • 15th July - notification by end of October
  • 15th October - notification by end of January

IFI Shared Neighbourhood Programme

Financial assistance is available for communities throughout Northern Ireland to create shared housing schemes.  The scheme is intended to see the development of up to 30 shared housing schemes over the next three years, in order to overturn the legacy of communities living separately as a result of The Troubles.

The Programme will provide grants to enable community organisations to celebrate diversity and bring people together through cultural awareness, community events and community relations training. Training and on-the-ground practical support will be provided via a dedicated team of Cohesion Advisers and it is hoped community consultations will help groups design their own Neighbourhood Charters and deliver their own Good Relations programmes.

The housing areas across Northern Ireland which have already agreed to participate in the Programme are:

Energy Efficient Venues

Improving energy efficiency within community venues across Northern Ireland

Efficient Venues will pay for community organisations to carry out works to their venue to make them more environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient.  As well as benefiting the environment, this programme will help community organisations save on their heating and lighting costs.
The outcome of the Energy Efficient Venues programme is:Organisations have been supported to create energy efficient community venues across Northern Ireland.

Grants of £2,000 - £10,000 and grants of £15,000 - £50,000 are available for groups to carry out improvements such as double glazing, upgrading insulation, or installing a more efficient heating system.  If the venue is already energy efficient, a grant could give organisations the opportunity to install solar panels, wind turbines, or biomass technologies such as wood pellet boilers.

You can choose to make one grant application, for either a small grant or a large grant. If you are applying for a £15,000 - £50,000 grant you will need to have carried out an energy audit and obtained any necessary statutory permissions before sending us your application.

If you want to make two applications (for a small grant followed by a large grant, or two small grants) you will need think about whether you have enough time to do this. To apply for a second grant, you must have successfully completed the work on your small grant, submitted your End of grant report and received confirmation that your small grant has been closed.

Global Fund for Women – Women’s Fund

The Global Fund for Women is a publicly supported grant making foundation that advances human rights by investing in women-led organisations worldwide.
Funding is available to organisations outside the United States that advance the human rights of women and girls. Three types of grant are available:
• General support grants.
• Travel grants.
• Organising meeting/event grants

Nationwide Foundation Small Grants Programme

Application Deadline: Ongoing / Rolling Programme
Grant Value: £500 - £5,000

The Nationwide Foundation has a Small Grants Programme which makes grants to registered UK charities (including those in Northern Ireland) which offer financial and/or housing related support to:

• survivors of domestic abuse
• older people aged over 50

The Nationwide Foundation is funded by the Nationwide Building Society and via its small grants programme provides grants of between £500 - £5,000 to registered charities UK wide and has now increased the income threshold for charities who can apply to £750,000.  Grants are available for two kinds of work, and for two sections of the population.  The two areas of work are:

• Tackling financial exclusion affecting disadvantaged groups;
• Addressing housing issues and homelessness among vulnerable groups.

Telecommunity  Funding Programme at CFNI

Grant Value: up to £3,000

The Telecommunity Programme is an ‘own name’ fund set up with capital from BT, management and unions and matched by Community Foundation funds.  The programme targets work with young people (teenagers) and people with disabilities in community based organisations in areas of disadvantage.  Projects need to be tackling issues relevant to people with special needs living in areas of disadvantage within Northern Ireland. The fund is keen to support initiatives that help to develop:

•community education and training opportunities
•communication and leadership skills
•local initiatives to improve resources and community facilities
•creativity and self expression through drama, music or a range of arts activities
•out of school projects for young people

There is no formal application form for Telecommunity, hence groups are asked to write to Telecommunity and include the following information:

• A description of your group - its aims & activities
• A description of the proposed project, its origins, purpose and cost
• An outline of how the group plans to evaluate its work
• A copy of your group's constitution and latest annual report, if available
• A recent statement of accounts
• A list of your committee members
• A contact address and daytime telephone number
 
Please allow plenty of time for your application to be processed. The Committee meets in January, May and September each year.  Applications should be received at least a month before the Committee meeting.

Society for the Assistance of Ladies in Reduced Circumstances (SALRC) – Grants for Individuals

Grant value:  Not stated although assistance is available for the following:
• Regular allowances paid monthly.
• Paying for television licences and telephone rental charges.
• Sending birthday and Christmas cards to regular beneficiaries, some of whom receive no other cards.
• Sign-posting to other potential sources of funding.

The Society was founded in 1886 by the late Miss Edith Smallwood.  It assists women domiciled and habitually resident in the United Kingdom who are living alone in their own home (either owned or rented) and in genuine need, irrespective of age or social status.

Community Relations Capital Expenditure Programme

Financial assistance is available to voluntary groups to support the cost of community based facilities including all fixtures, fittings and equipment, which are accessible and used by all sides of the community in a bid to develop better community relations in Northern Ireland.  Grants will be provided on the basis of need and its purposes with regard to promoting better relations between communities. Projects should reflect the size of the community which they intend to serve.
