Women and Peace Building: Sharing The Learning

Our cross-border conference on Women and Peace Building: Sharing The Learning gathered together 350 women in Titanic Belfast last week.

Held in conjunction with the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland (CFNI) and the National WRDA Staff at Sharing The LearningWomen's Council of Ireland (NWCI), the event was the culmination of a two-year project on Women and Peace Building, supported by the Special EU Programmes Body.

The main focus of the conference was discussion of UNSCR 1325, a resolution passed by the UN Security Council to reaffirm the important role of women in the resolution of conflicts and the maintenance of peace and security, which ROI is currently in the process of adopting, but NI is not.

A new toolkit was announced to help women lobby on UN 1325 and other issues. Speakers at the conference included Victim’s Commissioner Kathryn Stone and Baroness May Blood.

A panel of four experts gave their views on UN 1325. Sitting on the panel were Diane Dodds, MEP; Irene Miskimmons, NIWEP; Stella Burnside, Equality Commission; and Liz McManus, who is working on the implementation of the resolution in ROI.

Conference delegates also had the chance to share their own opinions on UN 1325, as well as the associated toolkit, during a lengthy table discussion. One of the key points raised at the tables was need to reach women at a grassroots level and ensure they understood why introducing the resolution could have positive implications for them. Check out this report to find out more about the views put forward.

Work on the toolkit will now continue, with the aim to have it finalised by May. Watch this space for further information!
