WRDA Attends NUS-USI Manifesto Launch10th February 2016On Friday the 5th February, WRDA Communications and Membership worker Katie, attended the launch of the student manifesto for the 2016 Northern Ireland assembly elections. The key theme of the day was ‘Owning Our Future’ which was illustrated with a statement balloon display at the Belfast Metropolitan College Titanic Quarter Conference Hall.
The launch was informal with a panel discussion from a range of student speakers who shared their experiences within the higher education system in Northern Ireland. Discussions were based around budget allocations, proper investment in higher education, and accessibility to education, increasingly high transport costs, on campus childcare, apprenticeships for women and more.
The event was chaired by NUS-USI President, Fergal McFerran who said; “NUS-USI has travelled the length and breadth of Northern Ireland over the last seven months, visiting university and college campuses to speak to our student body. The hundreds of conversations that we’ve had have informed our student manifesto and I can say with confidence that our students look to the future with an ambitious optimism.”
The manifesto focuses on education, work and society, as well as students’ unions, and makes a range of proposals aimed at delivering equality and making Northern Ireland a more prosperous place to live, work and learn.
The campervan of dreams was also in attendance where WRDA wished for a society with better access to education opportunities for women in rural and disadvantaged areas.
