WRDA intern Diane attends Childcare Cost Survey event
On Monday 9th November, our new intern Diane attended the Employers for Childcare “Childcare Cost Survey” event in Stormont. Rachel Dennison of Employers for Childcare gave an overview of childcare costs in NI. According to the research report, a fulltime childcare place costs £164 per week. This high cost is one of the reasons why families decide to combine different types of childcare. Some might involve the grandparents, which has both advantages and disadvantages for all involved. It was significant that many parents were not aware of the disadvantages of informal childcare, as there is greater financial support available for formal childcare users. Leanne Hawthorne explored the situation some families are faced with. She shared her perspective as a mother, and pointed out that not working shouldn’t be an option. Chris Briggs then gave a presentation on the upcoming changes to financial support and the negative impact these will have on families. The main changes refer to tax credits, universal credit, tax-free childcare and the childcare voucher-scheme. The event was closed by Chris Lyttle MLA.
