International Women's Day 2013 International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the struggles and achievements of women all over the world, celebrated each year on 8th March. It originated from two sources: the struggles of working class women to form trade unions and the fight for women's right to vote. While we recognise that women have not achieved full social, economic and politically equality, this is a time to celebrate the significant progress we have made so far. More Information> International Women's Day 2012 Over 2011 / 2012 WRDA staff had been active members at the Reclaim the Agenda meetings hosted by WOMEN’STEC and worked to establish a plan for celebrating International Women’s Day 2012. The theme of the celebrations 'Women's Rights: Past, Present and Future' aimed to recognise that while women have not achieved full social, economic and politically equality, this is a time to celebrate the significant progress we have made so far. Women's organisations and groups from across the region came together to organise a March and Rally through Belfast City Centre to City Hall. Speakers reflected the theme of the IWD celebrations, with Patricia McKeown, Avila Kilmurray and Kelli Turtle, Belfast Feminist Network, rallying the crowd with reflections on the past, present and future respectively of women’s continuing struggle for equality. Voca Loca, an all women’s choir sang for the crowd and drummers Chi-dam Braram ensured the proceeding did not go quietly!
An exciting action took place where 7 street names across the City of Belfast were changed to commemorate notable women who had lived in the local areas. The renamed streets are as follows:
City Centre Betty Sinclair Street (Premiere Inn, Waring Street) South Belfast Joyce McCartan Road (Mornington Enterprises, Ormeau Road) Isabella Tod (WRDA, Mount Charles) West Belfast Emma Groves Road (Relatives for Justice, Falls Road) East Belfast Sarah McBride Road (Greenway Women’s Centre) North Belfast Mary Hanson Road (Holy Cross School) Winifred Carney Avenue (SIPTU, Carlisle Circus) Photos from International Women's Day 2012 Launch Night, Black Box.
