* Attending for a cervical smear is an important step in taking care of your health. * Each year about 80 women in Northern Ireland are diagnosed with cervical cancer. * 20 – 30 women die each year from cervical cancer. * Early detection and treatment can prevent 7 out of 10 cases of this cancer. * In Northern Ireland cervical screening is available every three years for women aged 25 – 49 and every five years for women aged 50 - 64. * Cervical screening prevents 75% of cervical cancers from developing. * In the UK one in four women do not attend cervical screening when invited.
